It really amped up the tension and it made you better at the game in the sense that you had to learn how to react very quickly to major threats that could appear out of nowhere. My best memories of KF1 were when things really hit the fan and everyone was in a panic and trying to run away from an area, and a FP would turn a corner and cut us off. IMO that just takes away all of the suspense of gameplay and allows you to essentially play on cruise control until you hear the roar sound. With the KF2 system, every single player's game volume is immediately lowered so that everyone can clearly hear the sound of a FP/Scrake spawning in. It really forced you to pay attention to all the angles that zeds could come from in order to survive and not get caught off guard. Back in KF1 a big part of the suspense and difficulty came from turning a corner and coming face to face with a fleshpound or scrake. I'm not sure how other people feel about this, but I personally hate the loud roar that the fleshpounds and scrakes make when they spawn into the map.
